Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and raised between the United States and the United Kingdom, Sean Bobbitt began his professional life as a television news cameraman and documentary filmmaker. For more than a decade, he covered major world events and conflicts across the globe. Those experiences profoundly shaped his approach to cinematography, teaching him the value of observation, truthfulness, and the power of natural light.

His transition into narrative filmmaking led to a long collaboration with director Steve McQueen. Together they made Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave, and Widows, with 12 Years a Slave being awarded the Oscar for Best Picture.

Throughout his career, Sean has photographed a wide range of films, including The Place Beyond the Pines, Byzantium, Queen of Katwe, On Chesil Beach, The Courier, The Rhythm Section, and Judas and the Black Messiah. His work on Judas and the Black Messiah earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

Whether working on an intimate character-driven drama or a large-scale production, his goal is always the same: to create images that serve the story and draw audiences into the emotional lives of the characters.
