Biography: Julian Morson
Assoc. BSC ACO GBCT
I shot my first film on Super 8mm while studying 3D Design at Wimbledon School of Art. The short film won first prize in a BBC tv competition, Showreel ’87, judged by award winning DP Chris Menges BSC. Years later, I worked with Chris as his operator on Redemption (2013).
I originally joined the film & television industry as a commercials runner at Ridley Scott Associates. Having gained experience as a camera assistant on commercials, documentaries and television drama, I progressed to operating. Acquiring skills such as steadicam helped to build my reputation and propel my journey into feature films - reuniting with Ridley Scott as camera operator and splinter unit DP, on features: The Counselor (2013); Exodus: Gods & Kings (2014).
For me, collaboration is incredibly inspiring and rewarding, the key to producing quality work. I have collaborated regularly with Ben Davis BSC on 15 feature films since 2005, including three films with director Matthew Vaughn: Stardust (2007); Kick Ass (2010); The King’s Man (2020) and four Marvel films: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014); Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015); Doctor Strange (2016); The Eternals (2021).
One notable highlight of my career was operating Steadicam for the opening sequence on Spectre (2015). The four minute ‘continuous’ shot was created with a combination of stitched Steadicam and Technocrane shots, on location in Mexico City.
I received a nomination for The Operators Award (2018) for outstanding Camera Operator work on a Feature Film for Paddington 2 (2017).
I joined as an Associate BSC Member in 2010, proposed by David Higgs BSC. I am currently on the Board of ACO & GBCT.
