His earliest credit is as focus puller on The Angel with the Trumpet (1950 Directed by Anthony Bushell, photographed by Robert Krasker BSC). Other credits as focus puller include The Sound Barrier (1952 Directed by David Lean, photographed by Jack Hildyard BSC), The Belles of St. Trinians (1954 Directed by Frank Launder, photographed by Stan Pavey BSC) and as second unit camera operator on Olivier’s Richard III (1955 Directed by Laurence Olivier, photographed by Otto Heller BSC).
Shortly after this he became head of the camera department at Shepperton Film Studios.
