Early photographic experimentation and success with a friends darkroom lead Matt to choose Photography and Art History at A level. He went on to study film at Newport Film School specialising in cinematography, graduating with a distinction in 1986.

Aged 22, Matt became an assistant at Magpie Films, later taking up an opportunity to become a staff cameraman for five years. His passion flourished through filming broadcast documentaries and current affairs, gaining technical grounding and developing a sensitivity for human stories.

As a freelancer, Matt continued to travel the world on projects from the Sahara to Siberia and completed Absolute Truth (1998 d. Farah Durrani), a series on the Catholic Church for the BBC. He also began shooting pop promos for bands such as Soul II Soul, commercials and short films, allowing him to explore new ideas with colour and light.

In 1997, he worked alongside Ashley Rowe BSC filming 2nd Unit on Still Crazy (1998 d.Brian Gibson). Ashley’s natural approach to lighting and camera engagement was an inspiration and he remains an important influence.

Matt’s short film collaboration with director Tom Vaughan helped him achieve his first Television drama credit on I Saw You (2002 d.Tom Vaughan). Following this he worked on series 3 of Cold Feet (2000 d.Tim Whitby) and continued to build his body of work and develop a visual style, a key moment being Oliver Twist (2007 d. Coky Giedroyc) for the BBC.

Matt’s energy and enthusiasm has enabled him to forge close relationships with many directors, including three projects with Marc Munden, culminating in the BAFTA winning Iraq war film, The Mark of Cain (2007 d.Marc Munden) and four projects with James Strong including the BAFTA winning 1st series of Broadchurch (2013 d. James Strong). He was fortunate to be signed by Casarotto in 2000 and was proud to become a member of the BSC in 2012.

Over 30 years as cameraman, Matt has been a key part of setting up original, successful dramas, such as Gentleman Jack (2019 d.Sally Wainwright) and Liar (2017-2020 d. James Strong) and critically acclaimed, award winning stories such as Kiri (2018 d. Euros Lyn), Apple Tree Yard (2017 d.Jessica Hobbs) and Three Girls (2017 d.Philippa Lowthorpe). The latter wining 31 awards including 8 BAFTAs and an RTS award for Matt’s delicately observed cinematography.
