OLIVER STAPLETON BSC “ANY QUESTIONS?” PANEL AT CAMERIMAGE 2019

For those of you going to Camerimage (and even if you are not!) please submit questions for this panel. The panel has the following participants:

Rather than ask individual panel members about their own work, I am seeking broader questions:

I spoke to an Academy Award winning cinematographer about natural lighting, and he said to me that he couldn’t help but shoot with a ‘vulgar’ lighting style- that is, with convenient but illogical key lights that make actors all look good, with nice backlights etc. It seems that in more recent times the pursuit of cinematographers is a more unstructured organic design, where you might only light the space and let the actors move within it.

Could you please talk about the intuition behind this concept and the challenges involved?
