Casarotto Marsh
Before I was a teenager I had already discovered some extraordinary films thanks largely to my Father. Films that opened doors to other worlds and to a possible future direction for me, films such as Yojimbo, or the surrealist director Bunuel and the comic genius Jacques Tati.
I was fortunate to have a darkroom in our house and there I was able begin a long journey of learning and experimenting with images that took me to study fine art and ultimately to become a DOP.
There are many little steps in ones career over many years but the highlight of my time as a camera operator was as A camera/ steadicam Operator on the film of the musical Les Miserables having previously operated on The King’s Speech for the same director. My first major feature film as a DOP was The Death of Stalin directed by Armando Iannucci whome I continued to work with on the film The Personal History of David Copperfield.
I had previously worked for many years as a camera assistant and then again as a camera operator. A lot of the people I looked up to were both warm and generous and at the same time able to skilfully do a job that at times seemed utterly impossible such as Simon Finney, a focus Puller at the time and the operator Rodrigo Gutierrez. Probably the person I owe most to is the DOP Danny Cohen who I met as a young focus puller and I who I was fortunate to work with for many years rising up through camera department.
It was Danny along with Barry Ackroyd who proposed me for entry and I was honoured to join the BSC in 2016.
The best working relationships are those that are rewarding but also challenging and I’ve been very fortunate to have shot two films now with Armando Iannucci and the producer Kevin Loader who are both brilliant in many ways.
