Murtha Skouras - USA
It wasn’t until I was an undergraduate in my 20s, studying Chemistry, that I first became aware of cinema and immediately developed a passion for it. I was drawn to cinematography because of its combination of technical craft and artistic interpretation.
I knew nothing about the film industry, had no contacts in it, but I had heard of Panavision, so I pestered them to let me come in and learn, and the technicians there taught me how to load magazines and build a camera. I was then able to work as a trainee, then a loader, and assisted on all kinds of projects here in the UK and in New York.
Four years later I applied to the NFTS and gained a place on the cinematography course, studying under such BSC luminaries as Billy Williams, Sue Gibson, Seamus McGarvey and, of course, Brian Tufano.
A short film I shot the year after film school (THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAN IN THE WORLD, dir. Alicia Duffy; prod. Hugh Welchman) enjoyed a lot of success on the festival circuit and opened a number of doors for me in terms of both commercials and more narrative work.
I consider myself fortunate to have had a number of key mentors throughout my career, both at film school and in the film industry as a whole: the community of cinematographers is a great resource and constant source of inspiration, as is the knowledge and experience of crews in general and also rental houses. In this regard, I would single out Adam Coles at Panavision and Pat McEnallay at Green Kit.
Christopher Ross proposed me for membership of the BSC and I was delighted to be accepted. It was certainly a career ambition of mine, and inspires me to carry on and do yet more exciting work in the future.
