Chris Menges received a Lifetime Achievement Award at a moving Ceremony at Camerimage this weekend.
Nigel Walters writes: The closing ceremony of Camerimage was the most emotionally charged of any in my experience over the last fifteen years. After the customary applause for Chris; Marek had to bring him back on stage to witness the affection and admiration he had stirred in everyone’s hearts. All had remained standing and applauding long after he exited backstage for the first time. Obviously somewhat embarrassed he waited until they had stopped and in true Chris humility said simply ” Thank you and bless you all.” A great cinematographer and human being.
Chris has inspired a generation of cinematographers, directors, critics and viewers with the wonderful images he has produced over the last half century. His work showcased at the Festival included Kes, Michael Collins, Local Hero, A World Apart and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estarada, and The Killing Fields and The Mission, both of which afforded him well deserved American Academy Awards.
Ed Lachman ASC won the Golden Frog for his photography of Carol, Sturla Brandt Grøvlen scooped the Silver Frog forRams and Mátyás Erdély the Bronze for Son of Saul.
When Ed was declared the winner for ‘Carol’ the whole building erupted in an expression of sheer joy. The applause continued and continued and continued. Somehow his triumph was what Camerimage is all about.
Standing ovations for Chris, Ed and Marek, each touched the complete range of human sensitivity. (NW)
