BSC Mentoring - Mentees

Introduction
The BSC mentoring scheme is designed to nurture young cinematographers by pairing them with more experienced colleagues who are members of the BSC.  If you feel that you have reached a stage in your career where meeting up on a regular basis with a more experienced colleague then this scheme might be for you.

How does it work?
You simply fill in the form below by 8pm on June 9th 2024 and we will be in touch with you to explain the next stage of the process which will involve pairing you with one of our volunteer members.  We will let you know if it doesn’t work out this year, but you can apply again next year.

What benefits does the scheme have for me?
In the past, mentees have had the following to say about their contact with their mentor (names removed):

“I was chosen for the BSC mentorship  and it was really good. We had great chats and are still in touch, he was lovely and patient and happy to share. It meant a lot for me because I felt more connection with the industry and was great to hear how he got into tv drama, it opened a new perspective.”

“Under the mentorship of Stuart Bentley BSC I've gained invaluable knowledge and honed my skills in cinematography. His guidance and unwavering support have paved the way for numerous opportunities, bolstering my confidence and development throughout my filmmaking journey.”

How much does it cost?
The scheme is free, however you cannot claim expenses for travel etc to meet up with your mentor... but they might buy you a coffee!

Apart from chatting, what else might happen?
The basic commitment is 6 x 1hr contact time with your mentor across a 6 -12 month period. This can be on zoom or a phone call  but we encourage the first meeting to be in person if possible.

Beyond this commitment your mentor might be able to arrange:

  • A set visit (where possible)
Previous mentees have got so much from the experience of being on set - even one day can be hugely beneficial. You would be on set to observe only: you are not a working member of the camera department.

  • Joining your mentor for a recce / or part of pre production.
If your mentor is in pre-production you might be able to join them on a recce or sit in on a production meeting.

  • Joining your mentor in the grade
Mentors will need permission from their Producer to bring you in to the grade:  this cannot always  be obtained and might require you to sign an NDA.
